Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;

Gerald "Jerry" Hubble, a Distinctive Hosteler

Jerry Hubble of Somerset, Kentucky and Green Valley, AZ recently attended his 75th Elderhostel program. As great as that is, it was the 18th program he has attended through NAU Elderhostel! Beginning in January 1998 with our Sedona program, Jerry has been to many of our programs and met many of our coordinators. For the last 5 years or so, Jerry has made his annual migration from Kentucky to Arizona in the fall and then back to Kentucky again in the spring. When he can, he tries to do an Elderhostel or two along the way and has often made NAU programs a part of his annual pilgrimage.

Though Jerry has been to our Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Healing Arts, Astronomy and Monument Valley programs, the majority of those he’s attended have to do with computers. He first attended a beginning computer course in the Computer Training Center in the old College of Business back in 1999. As we got closer to moving into our new office in January 2006, we sent Jerry the link to the new CBA webcam. You can view it at: http://cbawebcam.cba.nau.edu/view/view.shtml .
He remarked that he likes to see whether or not we have snow in Flagstaff and says that the webcam is great because you can actually see people walking!

Jerry has long been a great supporter of our programs. "I know of no other site (besides NAU) that offers a first-class computer lab dedicated solely to Elderhostel's use. And each time I return to NAU, it is just like visiting old friends and family."

Jennifer Beltz, who was the coordinator of the Beginner Computer program Jerry attended in 1999 is always happy to see Jerry’s name pop up on a roster. “Jerry has been such a great supporter of our programs through the years and always so complimentary of our staff and our operation. We wish we could clone him! It’s so much fun to reunite with returning hostelers we’ve come to know over the years. We’re lucky that we offer so many diverse programs that hostelers want to come back to another NAU program.”

In recognition of Jerry’s long-time dedication to our NAU Elderhostel programs we are awarding him a Snapshot program of his choice! Thank you Jerry!
We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Grand Canyon Music Festival -
Natural Wonder by Day, World-Class Music by Night
Clare Hoffman & Robert Bonfiglio
Founders of the festival, Robert Bonfiglio (Director) and Clare Hoffman (Artistic Director)

Founded in 1983, this two-week long music festival is the highlight of the Grand Canyon area's cultural scene each September when the most highly talented and trained classical musicians from around the world present a series of chamber music concerts in a magical setting. The 24th season of the Grand Canyon Music Festival takes place September 1-16, 2007, with acclaimed artists such as the Calder Quartet and string-band Ethel. High caliber musicians are drawn to the festival not only because of its awe-inspiring setting but also because of its reputation for quality musicianship and sophisticated leadership.

September is a great time to visit the Grand Canyon. Daytime high temperature at the South Rim averages 76 F, with the nighttime low averaging 47 F. From sunrise to sunset, the colors of the canyon are constantly changing with the angle of the light.

In addition to two inspiring concerts, NAU Elderhostel participants in the 5-night program will enjoy field trips to pre-historic cliff dwellings and the Museum of Northern Arizona as well as a whole day in Sedona, traveling through beautiful Oak Creek Canyon, exploring its crimson landscapes and abundant galleries.

Performers:
September 7 and 8, 2007 - The Calder Quartet
"The Calder's sound is American, big, bold, firm, clean."
- Mark Swed, The Los Angeles Times

The brilliant, young Calder Quartet performs the classics and the soon-to-be classics, including Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Philip Glass, Terry Rile, and Thomas Ades.

September 14 and 15, 2007 - Ethel
“Ethel… created a world in which classical music had never grown distant, a world in which it was as fresh and direct as crowds dancing in the street.”
Greg Sandow, The Wall Street Journal
The string band Ethel has performed and collaborated with some of today's most prominent and exciting artists, including Sheryl Crow, Roger Daltrey, Joe Jackson, and Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, among many others.

RECOMMENDED READING

Traveling Alone but Safely

House of Rain: Tracking a Vanished Civilization Across the American Southwest
The mysterious fate of the Anasazi of the American Southwest.
Author, Craig Childs

This book, by the author of The Secret Knowledge of Water, should be of interest to any hosteler who has either visited Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde or other prehistoric sites in the Four Corners, or who has had a yen to explore them, either in person or from the comfort of their couch. Childs juxtaposes accounts of his own explorations and adventures in this region with well researched insights into those who inhabited these southwestern landscapes. It’s a good read for any of you who can’t get enough of books about the ancient peoples of the Southwest.
- Jennifer Beltz, NAU Elderhostel
