Pueblo Heritage: The
Anasazi, Hopi, Zuni and Chaco Canyon
April 6, 2008
This was an
excellent trip. The guide and organizing group, North Arizona
University, were very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. We
spent two days out of Flagstaff, visiting Walnut Canyon, seeing our
first cliff dwellings and ancient houses. The walk down into the
Canyon was closed because of a rock fall, but we could see dwellings
very well from the top, plus touring some ruins on the rim.
We spent four days out of Gallup NM, visiting a Hopi village on top
of a mesa one day, visiting a Zuni village another day, including a
Visitor Center/Museum, tour of the Pueblo church with magnificant
murals, and lunch in the home of a local Zuni family. The third day
was spent in Chaco Canyon, touring Pueblo Bonito, Casa Rinconada and
Chetro Ketl, three of the larger ruins there.
There were films or lectures several nights, but we got plenty of
sleep. The entire trip was fun, educational, interesting, and a
little challenging. It was the type of trip you remember because you
learned and understand a little more about the Anasazi. I highly
recommend it.

Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon offer some of the most exciting scenery on our planet. For those with a yen to raft the inner gorge of Grand Canyon (no white water), this program is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the splendor of the canyon, from its lofty rim viewpoints to a raft trip in the Canyon's depths. Explore historic Prescott with its impressive town square/courthouse. Spend an entire day at the South Rim in Grand Canyon National Park, take short hikes along the rim, explore historic Grand Canyon Village and enjoy spectacular rim views. At Peach Springs, locale of the only road to the bottom of the canyon (a well-kept Arizona secret), experience the beauty of rafting the Colorado River in the depths of the canyon during an afternoon on the river, including a dramatic entry via helicopter from the rim, and a picnic lunch on a canyon-bottom beach. Expert guides will introduce the geology, ecology, Native American history, and exploration history of Grand Canyon.
