Course Description
A Star Party at the
Edge of the Universe: Astronomy at Grand Canyon’s Rim
Glance down and you will see some of the
oldest exposed rocks from our planet…glance up and you will behold the
origin of our universe--welcome to the Grand Canyon Star Party! Enjoy two
nights of sky watching at one of the greatest astronomical events of the
year as more than 40 telescopes are pointed at the skies above to behold the
wonders of the clear June sky. Begin in Flagstaff, which has been a center
for astronomical study since the late 1800s and plays a pivotal role in
space research. Lectures from astronomers discuss planetary geology, the
origin of the universe, NASA projects, and other current topics. Visit
Lowell Observatory, discovery site of Pluto and a leading institution for
ongoing research, and Meteor Crater, the world's best preserved meteorite
impact site and used as a training ground for the Apollo astronauts. While
at the Grand Canyon, learn about the geology of this fantastic natural
wonder and enjoy hikes to its most spectacular viewpoints.
This event is always planned in June as the night skies are typically
free of clouds and, at 7,000 elevation, the south rim has diminished
atmospheric distortion and minimal light pollution.
