Detailed itinerary, dates & price

* NAU offers many programs that visit Grand Canyon National Park. Please see below for a link to a complete list of offerings.  Our Grand Canyon traditional program, #1058, is our most academically comprehensive.

Synopsis
Imagine a place where the timeline of earth is laid out in front of you. Imagine an endless horizon of color in shades from ivory to purple. Imagine being among  the first humans to stand beside one of nature's most astounding achievements. The word life takes on a kaleidoscope of meanings at the Grand Canyon; from the stories left behind in rock, to the first signs of humanity, to the people and animals who live there today. Let us share with you the knowledge and enthusiasm of generations who have been touched by this incredible place. For anyone who has never been to the Grand Canyon but has always dreamed of going, this is the chance you've been waiting for. Likewise, for those who have been waiting to return, why wait? We offer an insider's look into the past, present, and future of this national treasure. Listen to accounts of settlers, explorers, naturalists, and dreamers who came to the Canyon so long ago. In your free time stroll the rim beneath a western sunset backdrop. Here's a glimpse of what you will get.

Course Description
The Grand Canyon: In Depth And On The Edge # 1058
While the average visitor spends just a few hours at the Canyon, your week allows you time to immerse yourself in the Canyon's ever-changing vistas with ample time to experience its changing moods. What challenges faced John Wesley Powell as he explored the Canyon's depths? Who are the Canyon's Native American inhabitants? Listen to accounts of settlers, explorers, naturalists, miners and dreamers who came to the Canyon and were challenged by it.
Discover geology, natural history, and the status of the endangered and oft-seen California condor through presentations and rim walks. As one park ranger recently exclaimed, "by the end of the week, Elderhostelers are the best educated of Grand Canyon's five million annual visitors". Take time to linger over a canyon sunrise or sunset as you experience and contemplate this magnificent natural wonder.

This program is offered in late fall, winter, and early spring, which presents the hosteler an opportunity to spend a full week at the Grand Canyon without hoards of people.

Accommodations
Stay at a National Park Lodge just 1/4 mile from the South Rim!  Private bath, meals at nearby facility, adjacent to historic village. Programs requires short (1/2 mi.), frequent walks at an elevation of 7,000´.

Seasons offered:
Fall and Winter.
