Synopsis
NAU is proud to offer this program at Canyon de Chelly National Monument on the eastern Navajo Reservation. Home to ancient Hisatsinom (Anasazi) and historic stronghold of the Navajo people, Canyon de Chelly, at an altitude of 5,500-7,000 ft.,
is set against a backdrop of towering cliffs and sheer walled canyons.  The beauty of the canyon and of the Navajo will make for an experience you will not soon forget.

Course Description
Canyon de Chelly: Enduring Traditions and Modern Challenges
Spider Rock, Antelope House, Canyon del Muerto, Massacre Cave…place names which invoke the spirit, history and mystery that defines Canyon de Chelly.  Canyon de Chelly is nestled in the four corners area on the vast Navajo Reservation in scenic northeastern Arizona.  Visit this magical canyon while learning about the land and its people from the Navajo perspective.  With a backdrop of ancient ruins and beautiful canyons walls, the Navajos farm, raise sheep and live in hogans (traditional dwelling), many without running water or electricity.  Navajo speakers share aspects of Dine culture and discuss challenges of living on the Reservation.  Learn about the ancient inhabitants, the Indian Wars, Kit Carson and the Long Walk, and the return of the Dine to their sacred lands.  Enjoy Native art demonstrations and learn to recognize authenticity. Field trips to the Canyon's South and North Rims and a 4-wheel drive adventure into the Canyon's depths to view ruins and rock art.

Field trips include walking distances of 1/4 mile with one longer hike. Other canyon hiking options available during free time with certified guides (additional cost). Field trip elevations as high as 7,200'.

Accommodations
Housing, meals, and classroom in commercial motel with private bath in the nearby town of Chinle. No public transportation available. NAU encourages carpooling.
