Synopsis
NAU is proud to offer this
program at Canyon de Chelly National Monument on the eastern Navajo
Reservation. Home to ancient Hisatsinom (Anasazi) and historic
stronghold of the Navajo people,
Canyon de Chelly, at an altitude
of 5,500-7,000 ft.,
is set against a backdrop of towering cliffs and sheer
walled canyons. The beauty of the canyon and of the Navajo
will make for an experience you will not soon forget.

and Modern Challenges
Spider
Rock, Antelope House, Canyon del Muerto, Massacre Cave…place names
which invoke the spirit, history and mystery that defines Canyon de
Chelly.
Canyon de Chelly is nestled in the four corners area on the
vast
Navajo Reservation in scenic northeastern Arizona.
Visit this magical canyon while learning about the land and
its people from the Navajo perspective.
With a backdrop of ancient ruins and beautiful canyons walls,
the Navajos farm, raise sheep and live in hogans (traditional dwelling),
many without running water or electricity.
Navajo speakers share aspects of Dine culture and discuss
challenges of living on the Reservation.
Learn about the ancient inhabitants, the Indian Wars, Kit
Carson and the Long Walk, and the return of the Dine to their sacred
lands.
Enjoy Native art demonstrations and learn to recognize
authenticity. Field trips to the Canyon's
South and North Rims and a 4-wheel drive adventure into the Canyon's
depths to view ruins and rock art.
Field trips include walking distances of 1/4 mile with one longer
hike. Other canyon hiking options available during free time with
certified guides (additional cost). Field trip elevations as high as
7,200'.
Accommodations
Housing, meals, and classroom in commercial
motel with private bath in the nearby town of Chinle. No
public transportation available. NAU encourages carpooling.
