program
Synopsis
Designated a World Heritage Cultural Site, Mesa Verde National Park is the
largest archaeological preserve in the US and is located in the scenic 4
corners of the Southwest. Explore one of the great mysteries of the
Southwest - how an ancient people, the Anasazi, thrived for 700 years,
creating some of the finest art, architecture, and culture in ancient
America and then mysteriously abandoned the region.
Located near Cortez and Durango, Mesa Verde is a 5 hour drive from
Albuquerque and a full day's drive from Phoenix and Denver. Nearest
airport is Cortez (access via Denver).
Course Description
The mysterious Anasazi chose Mesa Verde
as their home centuries ago, building an elaborate culture among the
canyons and leaving an impressive legacy magnificently preserved. Visit
cliff dwellings and learn of the cultural, artistic, engineering and
farming advancements of these prehistoric people. Trace the history of
Mesa Verde from its discovery by the Wetherills to the Native Americans
who share this magnificent country today. Park Service staff,
historians, and archaeologists will lead discussions exploring the
Anasazi's supposed "disappearance" and lead field trips to view the
Park's impressive cliff dwellings. Be prepared for short hikes with some
steep ascents/descents and short ladders to climb inside the cliff
dwellings.
Exploration of Park's cliff dwellings (7000') requires good
physical condition and ability to climb short, steep ladders.
Accommodations
National Park Service Lodge, located inside the park,
provides central location and private balconies with 100-mile views.
