Course Description
Benjamin
Britten's War Requiem: A Choral Masterpiece of the 20th Century
Benjamin Britten’s
"War Requiem" premiered in 1962 to celebrate the reconsecration of
London’s Coventry Cathedral after its destruction during World War
II. Join the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra for a rare performance of
this meditative work. Britten’s "Requiem" is a work of grand
proportion, utilizing a full choir and main orchestra, three
soloists, a chamber orchestra, and a boys choir to communicate its
message on the truth of wars past and present. Hear compelling
stories of the war such as the significant role played by the Navajo
Code talkers, Arizona’s 1944 sensational ‘great escape’ of 25 German
POWs, and visit the Arizona State Capital Museum to view an exhibit
relating to the USS Arizona. Study the life and works of Britten and
attend a symphony rehearsal for a behind-the-scenes look at this
monumental work. Top off your week with a day in the beautiful red
rocks of Sedona to enjoy an additional musical performance and a
visit to the Mexican style marketplace of Tlaquepaque.
