Journey to northeastern Arizona on this Road Scholar program and discover the ancestral lands of the Hopi and Navajo peoples, enduring cultures that have captured the imagination of travelers for the last century. On an “Indian Detour,” fashioned on the explorations of the Fred Harvey Company in the early 20th century, stay on both the Navajo and Hopi reservations and encounter native speakers and artisans who share insights into their life ways. Visit a Hopi village atop a windswept mesa dating to 1100 AD, then move on to meet inhabitants of the red rocks, pine forests and canyons of Navajoland. Take part in daily discussions and demonstrations by native speakers, artisans and experts, and join native guides and local naturalists on field trips to off-the-beaten-path locales. Explore Canyon de Chelly by jeep, visit Hubbell Trading Post National Monument, Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert, and stay at a beautifully restored Harvey House along the Santa Fe rail line and old Route 66.

•Set off on a 4x4 journey to explore Canyon de Chelly National Monument, a major habitation sire of Ancestral Puebloans.

• Experience the traditions of the Navajo people that now inhabit the area around Canyon de Chelly, and learn about the modern challenges they face.

• Visit Hubble Trading Post National Historic Site for expert insight into the Southwest’s trading post era.
